Manufacturing

Handcrafted in South Korea

Black and camel leather pieces

We work with one workshop based in Seoul, South Korea to handcraft each bag from start to finish.

We spent months researching and meeting local artisans across South Korea to find the perfect workshop to bring our designs to life. Ultimately, we decided to work with a medium-sized workshop based in Seoul due to its attention to detail and beautiful craftsmanship during the sample making process.

Pattern Creation

The pattern for each Amalier bag is the template that ensures leather craftsmen appropriately sculpt our design and establish uniform quality from the sample to production. With decades of experience, our artisans cut detailed patterns for each piece of leather, inner lining, and interfacing to bring our original design to life. The pattern undergoes multiple changes during the development phase until its finalized for production.

Cutting

Once the finalized pattern has been cut and the sample has been approved, we transition into our production phase to craft a small batch of the new design. Each subsequent batch is manufactured based on demand.

Our leather craftsmen inspect each hide for any natural imperfections. Once the hides have been evaluated, each piece of leather is meticulously cut to only retain the premium sections of the hide. The inner lining and interfacing pieces are cut during this phase as well.

Leveling & Skiving

The thickness in leather will vary across the hide as it is a natural raw material. To ensure consistent quality across our bags, each piece of leather is leveled and skived to the nearest millimeter. This process also ensures the appropriate structure and weight is achieved based on the collection's design.

Gluing

Once the leather pieces have been skived, our artisans glue and bond applicable interfacing to these pieces to achieve the desired rigidity or flexibility of a design. Interfacing is a textile that varies in material and is used to add structure, strength, depth, and durability to a bag.

Edge Finishing

Based on the design, our artisans will either paint or fold the edges of each piece of leather to highlight details and enhance the durability of the bag.

The edge painting process includes delicately coating one base layer and three layers of premium leather paint.

Final Assembly

The assembly process involves bringing together each finalized component and adding any finishing touches. Our artisans stitch each leather piece together and add metal accents to bring the final design to life.

The finished bags then go through a detailed inspection process to ensure the highest level of quality and consistency. Any bags that do not meet our quality standards are remade from the beginning of our process. We archive each of these beautiful, but slightly imperfect, bags for future reference and use.
